Sam Porritt
Life Is A Journey

Brown is pleased to present a second solo exhibition by the artist Sam Porritt - Life Is A Journey. For this exhibition, Porritt will exhibit a new series of ink drawings exploring the idea of the line, alongside a single sculpture. It is the first time he will devote an exhibition largely to his drawings.

Life Is A Journey reflects the journey of a looped line, and follows its variations and movement from piece to piece. By drawing a line, one also draws the parameters of the object depicted. In an abstracted drawing, the line is not necessarily used to delineate an object, but rather the line becomes a representation of geometries, or further, becomes the object.

Porritt furthers this idea here by creating a series of works exploring the life of a repeating, looped line. In this journey, straight lines form obstacles that the looped line then navigates. Both intuitive and planned, the viewer can see human characteristics in intitally abstracted forms. Porritt’s aesthetic is reminiscent of Twombly in both its calligraphic style and emotive charge. As in seminal works by conceptual artist Hanne Darboven, the freewheeling forms adhere to a strict code of conduct underpinned by a methodical approach. Life Is A Journey aims to showcase a narrow road traveled in the territory between the conceptual and the figurative.

Alongside the drawings is a sculpture titled, Model For A Sculpture, I Am The Problem. This work consists of a series of plaster casts – a slab of clay, a human foot sinking into the clay, a footprint in the clay, and a foot by itself. The sculpture addresses our inability to recognize the full effect of our actions on the world while pointing to our inability to see ourselves at a remove.

Sam Porritt was born in 1979 in London, and received his MA from the Royal Academy in 2005, and his BA in Fine Art, Sculpture from the Chelsea School of Art in 2002. Recent exhibitions include Deceitful Moon at the Hayward Gallery, Double Object at Thomas Dane Gallery, and a solo exhibition at Hats Plus, London. The artist lives in Zurich and works in both Zurich and London.

Tablet Issue 02 features previous drawings by Sam Porritt not included in the exhibition.
